Top Takeaways From My First Job.

October 29, 2015

The great team over at The Ladders reached out to me about my very first job and what I came away with. I thought about it and decided that it would be good to share some of my insights from my very first gig. Holding a job is such a big part of our society and so many lessons can be learned from your first foray into the working world. My mom always encouraged  strong work ethic in me, even from a young age, so I was actually eager to get my first job. Well that, and the prospect of getting a little more spending money in my pocket didn’t hurt.

first job, job tips, workplace, work tips, job advice, blogger tips, blogger help, career, career help, career tipsimage via.

I’ve been in retail my whole life. From working on the sales floor in customer service, to running a whole store during my boutique days, to my current world of corporate retail. My first job was being a customer service specialist for JCPenney. I was a Recovery Team member, which basically meant a group of us on the team would go around the store folding clothes and returning items from the fitting rooms back to the selling floor. Definitely not glamorous but I still learned a lot through the experience.

Top takeaways from my first job:

  • You will meet a lot of interesting and unique people in the workplace. On my very first day I had lunch with a girl who rarely left the house except for school and a guy who was an atheist – which he was very apt to share on day one. You have to know who you are and be prepared for all types of people and all types of conversations. You’ll spend a lot of time in your work environment so do your part to make sure it’s a welcoming place to be!
  • Don’t be afraid of hard work, even when no one else around you is doing it. Your work ethic will not go unnoticed, you never know what opportunity awaits. Go the extra mile.
  • Stay positive no matter the situation. Don’t let others’ negative attitude get you down. We worked in a JCPenney location that was moving so it was an interesting atmosphere when everything was marked down to 65% off with the store getting more empty by the day. It could have been easy to succumb to the negative attitudes – but where does that get you?
  • Learn all that you can in your current role. The skills and knowledge that you pick up may be key in getting you to that promotion or next level. People love eager learners who are also willing to share their expertise on a subject.
  • Pack your lunch! It’s much more healthy and will save you so much money. If you start in your early days, you’ll be so glad you picked up this good habit. When you’re tight on time during a busy day, a packed lunch will be your best friend.

Hopefully some of these tips will be helpful to you, either in your first job starting out or in your current role.

Please share some stories from your first job! I’d love to hear!

xo,
c.

BIG style & BIG Dreams.

October 27, 2015

One of my favorite things about Dallas is the #DallasBIG campaign. All around the city are giant letters ‘B’ and ‘G’ where you stand in the middle as the ‘I’. It’s a fun promotion for the city that gets people involved. During one of my early morning shoots, I couldn’t resist being a part of the action.

Today’s outfit is inspired by 1960s style. So many great fashion and style inspirations come from the past. The print on this Zara top reminded me of vintage style. I decided to pair the top with this midi skirt with the flounce hem from ASOS. I love a peter pan collar. Something about this style is so chic and something you don’t always see. It’s a unique silhouette perfect for when you are looking to change things up.

For those that know me, know that I don’t have a big personality. I tend to be quiet and hang behind the scenes. But I believe that 2015 has been a year of setting the stage for me. While things haven’t gone quite the way I saw them going at the beginning of the year, I now feel like something big is brewing. This is an encouragement to live life to the fullest, each and everyday. You could be on the cusp of something great. What you are going through is preparing you for the next step. Keep going and always remember to dream BIG.

Always think outside of the box when it comes to life and style. Dream big, live big, and always have big style. Whether you prefer plain dressing, or lots of colors and accessories, just go for it. Style is often a reflection on the inside. Show the world how wonderful you are on the inside with your fabulous expression of outward style.

Game Day Style. Green Plaid.

October 22, 2015

Here in the south and definitely in Texas, we love us some game day style. Nothing quite like putting on your team’s colors and getting out to support with friends and family. Whether it’s tailgating at the game or gathering around the big screen for a watch party, team spirit is important. We wear our colors with pride and always in style.

My alma mater is Baylor University [sic ’em Bears!] and our colors are green and gold. One of my many thrills in life is to find outfits that would be perfect to show my Baylor spirit. BU is celebrating homecoming this weekend (we invented it) so I had to find a style-forward outfit with the right colors. It’s so fun to walk around campus and see everyone in the school colors. I enjoy seeing what other people come up with for creative ways to sport the green and gold.

baylor outfit, green and gold, green plaid, baylor style, gameday style, gameday outfit, plaid

This plaid top is a great transition piece that works for game days or as a perfect fall staple.

I jazzed up the outfit a little by adding the same snakeskin shoes from this post to add more interest. Nothing wrong with mixing it up!

I just love how easy this style is. A plaid shirt is a fall staple and there are so many ways to make it chic rather than lumberjack. Dark denim and a pair of fun heels are a good place to start. Plaid shirts are also versatile in how you style it. You can roll the sleeves, tie it at your waist, pop the collar for an ultra prep feel. Plaid shirts layer so easily – under a blazer, with overalls, or even under a sweater for a hint of color. Make plaid your friend this fall as the possibilities are endless.

Simply Make a Statement.

October 15, 2015

Hey there!

How is it already Thursday and October halfway over? I feel like I haven’t done enough fall-related activities yet. I’ve made chili (this recipe, so good) and my fall wreath is hanging on my door but I still feel behind. I know I haven’t had enough PSL’s (Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Latte for those who missed the memo) and I have yet to make anything with pumpkin in it. I think I’ll find a good pumpkin bread or muffin recipe to make this weekend. If anyone has a good one, send it over!

shift dress, fashion blogger, black and white, classic, pink, pop of color, kate spade bag, pink purse

So. I love this outfit. I love most of what I put on but this one is a favorite. There is something about classic black and white paired with fun accessories that really makes a girl smile. This bag is a repeat, last seen here, but it’s a great transition bag from summer into the fall season. A statement shift dress like this is great because it is easy to just throw on and go, plus they’re good at covering those areas you like to be covered.

black and white, classic, shift dress, simple dress, pink bag, pop of color, kate spade pink

This dress was from a secret shopping destination of mine that is now closed. It was Mikkat Market and I found it randomly through the Man Repeller. They had cute quality clothing and accessories at a good price. I think this dress was around $45, that’s how good. Sadly, they have closed the shop but don’t worry, I’ve linked other great options down below!

Here’s how to rock a simple outfit, yet make a statement:

  • Accessories are key! Look for bold, eye-catching accessories whether it be killer shoes, a great handbag, or a bold necklace. (Or all three in this case!)
  • Your clothing must be simple, yet chic. Plain is not what we are going for. You need a good canvas to layer the accessories on.
  • Don’t be afraid to mix colors and patterns. Pink croc is a bold combination but it works in this case.
  • Chose one color to be your highlight. I chose pink as my pop color and everything else is a neutral black and white.

Following these guidelines, it’s easy to make a statement without too much fuss. I can’t live without exciting accessories. It’s how to maximize your wardrobe and stretch your closet. Good, quality accessories will take you far.

Have a good weekend all!
xo,
c.

Paris Fashion Week. Show Reviews. #PFW

October 13, 2015

Paris Fashion Week – Spring 2016.

Alexander McQueen, McQueen, Paris Fashion Week, PFW, runway, Alexander McQueen Spring, Alexander McQueen Spring 2016 Runway, runway reviewAlexander McQueen.
I’ve always had an appreciation for Lee McQueen and  his namesake label. After his death and seeing the exhibit Savage Beauty at The Met in NYC, the appreciation only increased. Sarah Burton has done a wonderful job continuing on in the spirit of the house. With this spring collection she embraced the less severe and gave us a beautifully ethereal McQueen girl. The lace work, floral patterns, and intentional tailoring came together to show us the softer side of Alexander McQueen.

Valentino, Valentino runway, Valentino Spring 2016, Paris Fashion Week, PFWValentino.
Favorite show of the season. The design duo Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccoli really brought us something special. The inspiration was Africa, and not in the typical safari reference. They were reminded of the thousands of refugees from countries like Senegal, Nigeria, Eritrea, Mali, Gambia that are making the treacherous trip across the Mediterranean for a chance at life in southern Italy. The designers wanted to embrace the cultures, much like embracing those coming into their country.

From Vogue.com: We probably feel that the greatest privilege in doing our work is that fashion can give a message,” said Chiuri. “We think every person coming here is an individual, and we can show that we can improve ourselves by understanding other cultures.”
“The message,” added Piccioli, “is tolerance. And the beauty that comes out of cross-cultural expression.

The show is a beautiful fusion of Italian and African influences. I loved that a Valentino collection was able to step outside the Victorian, romantic, lace-wrought collections of late. While there still is lace, the studded leather, bone jewelry, and tribal prints were done in such a way that respects the culture. Fashion can often be fleeting and without meaning, but these designers were sure to use their platform to say something, beautifully.

Elie Saab, Elie Saab runway, Elie Saab Spring 2016, Paris Fashion Week, PFW, Elie Saab fashion week, Elie Saab runway showElie Saab.
Gowns galore is usually the story at Elie Saab. This season’s collection was not without gowns, but Elie gave us something new and fresh with an offering of separates geared towards a younger customer. With Kylie Jenner and Gigi Hadid walking the show in these new silhouettes, you can tell the brand is trying to broaden its range. I appreciate the transition Elie Saab is trying to make. This is how you appeal to a new customer while keeping your long-time core happy. ahem, Saint Laurent.

Chanel, Chanel runway show, Chanel Spring 2016, Paris Fashion Week, PFW, Karl LagerfeldChanel.
Airport travel chic as envisioned by Karl Lagerfeld. Not much needs to be said for a Chanel runway show. Karl always gives us fantasy and whimsy along with the classic tweed. I guess we have reason not to wear yoga pants and UGGs while traveling now.

What did you think about Paris fashion week? What shows were your favorites? Any trends you’re excited to try?

Fall Color Combination: Desert Sage. + Giveaway!

October 8, 2015

Did you know that there is an organization that decides the color palette for each season? If you’ve ever heard of Pantone colors, that’s them. You’ll find that most of the clothing and accessories offered each season fall somewhere in the color range they have set. Pantone is doing what we call fashion forecasting, predicting and establishing the trends about 8 months ahead of the season. They work so far in advance to bring us the colors we will all be wearing  for the season. While all of us were ready for summer back in March, the colors for this fall were already out. They are such an authority on color that fashion designers and retailers look to them for color direction when they go to design or buy a collection.

One of the colors for this fall that really grabbed my attention is called desert sage. This muted green shade is perfect for fall and the changing weather. Take a look at some clothing and accessories in this beautiful shade.

The importance of neutrals continues to evolve with Desert Sage, a cool and soothing greenish-gray that serves as the ideal neutral across the Fall 2015 palette. Timeless and unobtrusive, yet powerful enough to make a statement on its own, Desert Sage speaks to the feeling of naturally inspired colors that remind us of things that are real and not invented.

Finally Feeling Fall.

October 6, 2015

Finally.

The weather is finally turning and it’s starting to feel like fall here in the great state of Texas. Tonight I drove with the windows down and it was such a great feeling. To celebrate the arrival of fall weather, I’m excited to post this look that feels so right for the season.

The great thing about this blog is the wonderful stories that you come away with. This location almost got my photographer and I arrested. Okay….maybe not quite but I think we were trespassing. [Sorry business owners!] We saw the cute table and wonderful orange window and felt like it was so perfect for this outfit, never mind that it was behind a gate. The gate was open – and we went in! There were definitely security cameras around too. I’m just thankful we didn’t trip an alarm. That is why you need a fearless photographer. This girl knows how to pick her shots!

While I love summertime when you can wear shorts and sandals, fall style really opens up your wardrobe. I’ve been so excited to finally put this dress on. Although it is on the shorter side, the colors are the perfect fall color palette. You all know I’m not always a print girl but I found this number during a shopping trip with mom. I was skeptical when she first picked it up and then she made me try it on — and I liked it right away. [thanks mom!]

Once the weather gets even more cool, I’ll throw on some tights and a chunky sweater with this dress. Can’t wait!

How are you all embracing the weather change with your style?

September Stripes.

September 29, 2015

Polka dots. Leopard print. Stripes. As far as prints go, I don’t stray far from these three. Can’t quite say which is my favorite because they’re all pretty heavy in rotation. Beware: windblown hair below.

Today’s post is about one of my favorite items in my closet. Before we officially step into October and into fall, I had to post one of my favorite blog outfits to date. Being a blogger, you get to see the outfits of so many stylish people. This was one of those cases when I just had to grab this dress. I saw on Allison of Two Thirty Five Designs and immediately went on the hunt to find it.

black and white , maxi dress     the_block_is_haute-152

The dress was a Target steal (don’t you love that?). It reminds me of a dress from my favorite designer Oscar de la Renta. I love when you can get designer inspired style on a budget. Black and white stripes are so classic. I love the bold statement that the pattern makes as well. I even have a black and white striped wall in my apartment (DIY) which shows you just how much I love this pattern.

Oscar de la Renta, spring 2013, black and white, Oscar de la Renta black and white, Oscar de la Renta striped dress

Maxi dresses are another great option for the transitioning weather in the fall. With a wrap or cardigan this dress is perfect for those days that are crisp and cool in the morning but feel like summer by noon.

My wonderful photographer Izehi and I had so much fun on this shoot. We found a sweet spot by the lake and got a few snaps in on a hot summer evening. It’s always a joy to shoot with this lady. The detail shots she captured are just amazing. We didn’t even get the keyhole back but it’s an added bonus!

Fall Blooms.

September 24, 2015

fall outfit, flare jeans, flares, jeans, pop of color, outfit inspiration

Today I bring you another great transition look for these early fall days.

This outfit is super easy, simple for anyone to recreate. A short sleeve sweater or sweatshirt dressed up with a fabulous pair of flares with colorful accessories make dressing for the transitioning weather quite a breeze.

jeans, flare jeans, flares, fall outfit, outfit inspiration, natural hair, curls, twistout

Jeans can often mean comfort and casual, but I like to make a statement, even in jeans. Flares are so in right now, and let me tell you, I’m so glad that they are back in style. I was the flare queen back in 1998-2002. I had to have my flare jeans and platform shoes. But looking back, as hard as I tried, my middle school self was nowhere near as chic or put together as the flare outfits of today. Middle school was definitely awkward for me…but I eventually discovered my personal style.

Now I’m more polished [thankfully] and actually know what I’m doing when putting together an outfit. For flare jeans, you want to make sure they fit in the waist, are fitted through the leg, and break into the flare lower on the leg.

flare jeans, flares, jeans, fall outfit, twistout, natural hair, kate spade bag

Haute Tip: Always wear your favorite wedges when shopping for flare jeans. Flares with flats doesn’t really work. You’ll want to make sure that the length is right. The jeans should cover the shoe and just graze the floor.

[Fit is everything so it’s important to find what works for your body type.]
