Paris Fashion Week. Show Reviews. #PFW

October 13, 2015

Paris Fashion Week – Spring 2016.

I’ve always had an appreciation for Lee McQueen and  his namesake label. After his death and seeing the exhibit Savage Beauty at The Met in NYC, the appreciation only increased. Sarah Burton has done a wonderful job continuing on in the spirit of the house. With this spring collection she embraced the less severe and gave us a beautifully ethereal McQueen girl. The lace work, floral patterns, and intentional tailoring came together to show us the softer side of Alexander McQueen.

Favorite show of the season. The design duo Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccoli really brought us something special. The inspiration was Africa, and not in the typical safari reference. They were reminded of the thousands of refugees from countries like Senegal, Nigeria, Eritrea, Mali, Gambia that are making the treacherous trip across the Mediterranean for a chance at life in southern Italy. The designers wanted to embrace the cultures, much like embracing those coming into their country.

From Vogue.com: We probably feel that the greatest privilege in doing our work is that fashion can give a message,” said Chiuri. “We think every person coming here is an individual, and we can show that we can improve ourselves by understanding other cultures.”
“The message,” added Piccioli, “is tolerance. And the beauty that comes out of cross-cultural expression.

The show is a beautiful fusion of Italian and African influences. I loved that a Valentino collection was able to step outside the Victorian, romantic, lace-wrought collections of late. While there still is lace, the studded leather, bone jewelry, and tribal prints were done in such a way that respects the culture. Fashion can often be fleeting and without meaning, but these designers were sure to use their platform to say something, beautifully.

Gowns galore is usually the story at Elie Saab. This season’s collection was not without gowns, but Elie gave us something new and fresh with an offering of separates geared towards a younger customer. With Kylie Jenner and Gigi Hadid walking the show in these new silhouettes, you can tell the brand is trying to broaden its range. I appreciate the transition Elie Saab is trying to make. This is how you appeal to a new customer while keeping your long-time core happy. ahem, Saint Laurent.

Airport travel chic as envisioned by Karl Lagerfeld. Not much needs to be said for a Chanel runway show. Karl always gives us fantasy and whimsy along with the classic tweed. I guess we have reason not to wear yoga pants and UGGs while traveling now.

What did you think about Paris fashion week? What shows were your favorites? Any trends you’re excited to try?

New Threads for Minnie Mouse.

March 26, 2013

Disneyland Paris is celebrating their 20th anniversary! Well, the actual anniversary was in 2012 but they’ve extended the celebration through September of this year. To mark the start of the extended celebration, the park had a ‘Designers of Dreams’ runway show to showcase Disney character costumes re-imagined by top European designers. Nine designers took up the challenge to re-create runway looks especially for Disney characters.

Minnie - Disneyland Paris

Lanvin’s Creative Director Alber Elbaz created a custom-look for Minnie Mouse inspired by a runway look from the Fall 2012 collection (this one).

Hat designer Philip Treacy designed a Peter Pan inspired topper.

German designer Michalsky dreamed up a new gown for Cinderella.

Hopefully Minnie gets to wear her Lanvin dress for other special occasions. Her red-and-white polka dots are classic but this update from Alber Elbaz is really fun. Too bad Mickey didn’t get a new tux. Check out behind-the-scenes videos of the runway show and the making of the Lanvin dress. Here and here.

L’Officiel Hommes. Kanye West && Kim Kardashian.

March 3, 2013

The famous kouple couple Kimye is at it again. They are no stranger to the public lens, this time doing it in an editorial scene for the French men’s mag L’Officiel Hommes shot by Nick Knight for the Spring 2013 edition. The cover was released last week with a naked Kanye & Kim in a lover’s embrace.

The rest of the spread keeps the focus on Kanye, with clothes on. The spread is lengthy, featuring about 10 other shots. There is probably an editorial component, but nothing has been released yet. The parents-to-be look to be in love. Can’t wait to see their next editorial shoot, maybe with baby Kimye in tow?

Oui Oui Jenny.!

June 18, 2011

I saw this picture of Jennifer Lopez outside her hotel in Paris and just had to share. Jenny from the block is looking extra fabulous in this Fall 2011 Rachel Zoe ‘Cameron’ tuxedo dress in white. J.Lo is in Europe promoting her new single “On the Floor”.  Everything about this look screams diva and she wears it well. Even the sunglasses are on point, they remind me of my new Dior sunnies. The 41 year-old mother of twins is working this look to perfection.

You’ll be able to get this dress and the whole Rachel Zoe collection at Neiman Marcus in late july/early august.

Christian Dior. HauteCouture. Spring 2011.

January 25, 2011

John Galliano presented a beautiful collection for the house of Dior. He was inspired by René Gruau who did illustrations for Dior in the forties and fifties, the heyday of couture. Galliano credits Gruau as being the one who ‘captured Dior’s style and spirit better than any other because he understood his long-term friend… for me a Gruau sketch captures the energy, the sophistication and daring of Dior, and equally is testimony to an enduring friendship.’

The familiar Dior silhouettes were present in forms that displayed great technical ability. Gruau’s illustrations were duplicated on the fabric and also with embroidery. The light and dark shadows played off each other to create a pleasing effect to the eye. The draping effects used in the various tops and dresses communicated a sense of fierce elegance. I’m loving the layers of tulle that create the voluminous skirts. It will be exciting to see who will wear looks from this runway collection. I’m sure Dita Von Teese will be one of the first to attend an event wearing one of these wonderful creations. Maybe we will see one of the gowns at the Oscars. *fingers crossed*

Armani Privé. HauteCouture. Spring2011.

January 24, 2011

Giorgio Armani showacased his couture collection for spring this morning in Paris. Olivia Wilde, who wore Privé to the Golden Globes, sat front row at the show. The looks were very futuristic with bold colors in technicolor hues. Many of the looks featured geometric construction with rounded shoulders. Pants were heavy in this collection as they were featured in almost every look. There were pants with jackets, pants with dresses, even pants under skirts. By using creative fabric techniques, the silk and organza had a sheen, a reflective quality. The dresses at the end of the show were my favorite. The cut-outs and molded pieces are super cool. Since Mr. Armani is Lady Gaga’s go-to designer, I can definitely see her in some of the outstanding pieces that walked the runway.

More looks from the runway below.
