Falling for ‘Dior and I’.

May 25, 2015

Let me first start by saying that this fashion documentary truly enchanted me. I left the movie theater feeling so full & inspired. It re-energized my love of fashion, it was like fuel to my fashion soul.

“When you have a big stage, you step up. It  asks you to do more.” – Cathy horyn
(on raf Simons as the new creative director for christian Dior)

The fashion movie Dior and I, directed by Frédéric Tcheng, chronicles the appointment of Raf Simons to the creative designer post for the historic French fashion house Christian Dior, through the debut of his first haute couture collection, just 8 weeks later. The documentary starts with the introduction of Raf to the Dior atelier team, the seamstresses that work endless hours creating the beautiful couture creations that walk the runways each season.

Dior and I - movie still

As Raf is introduced to the atelier staff, we meet the women and men who carefully construct these one of a kind garments, including the most tenured seamstress who has been working for Christian Dior for 42 years. The first thing they ask Raf is if he will be working until the last-minute, offering to him their help and expertise as it was his first ever haute couture collection. Raf feels the pressure and expresses his heightened stress level of the shortened timeline to his right hand man & studio director Pieter Mulier.

The challenge for Raf Simons was to create a collection for a house with so many archival fashion codes. He wanted to be radical in his approach to modernize the house. The film was great in its juxtaposition of the design process of Monsieur Christian Dior and now Raf, who was embarking on a similar journey of taking something from the past and re-creating it in a new, romantic light. Much like the way Christian Dior did when he created the “New Look” of the 1940’s and 1950’s, giving women a new way of dressing post-war reminiscent of his mother’s rounded silhouettes.

Dior and I Orchid

Although Raf is a visual person, he does not sketch himself. He takes pictures of ideas, photographs inspiration and pulls together files that are sent to the team who then uses them to sketch 150-200 looks that are then edited down and selected by Raf. The sketches chosen are then sent to the atelier where the stylists then choose what look they would like to create from scratch, starting with muslin and toile. I loved hearing from a seamstress who showed much excitement to sew a garment with lots of tailoring. And once she heard that it was to be done in velvet fabric, she became even more enthusiastic. That passion for her craft was really beautiful to see.

Other key points in the film included a fitting for the runway show where dresses were expected to be ready to review, yet a delay due to a couture client caused tension between Raf and the team. The world of haute couture is an expensive proposition so business needs must be balanced with the creative side. Another balancing act involved Dior PR bargaining with the often camera-shy Raf for press time in order to get ad space in an important Paris magazine. A designer is not just a designer, but is often the face of the brand and in today’s time must be accessible unlike the designers of Christian Dior’s heyday.

It was great to see how inspiration strikes, as we get to see the moment that Raf came up with the insane idea to create the rooms of an old mansion completely covered in flowers as the gorgeous backdrop to the runway show. Despite challenges of fittings, fabrics, and working with a new team under a tight deadline, the collection came together beautifully as Raf was fêted by many of fashions’ finest including Anna Wintour, Donatella Versace, Alber Elbaz, and Marc Jacobs, as well as Dior darlings like Jennifer Lawrence and Marion Cotillard. The emotion that poured out from Raf Simons at the various points between his introduction at Dior to his catwalk finale bow was refreshing. I identified with him on that level of feeling an emotional connection to your work and just hoping that it will be good, and that people will respond positively.

Getting an inside look into one of fashion’s most historic houses was truly a treat. I encourage everyone to go see the film & let me know your thoughts!

“I don’t give up. i don’t give up until the first girl goes on stage.” – raf simons

fashion movie - Dior and I

tips & takeaways:

1. Pursue your passion with all abandon. Whether you are front and center or behind-the-scenes making sure all the details come together, do everything with passion. People can see it when it’s genuine and they will respond. Pure passion will take you farther than you ever thought possible.

2. Try to learn a few language, even if it is just conversational. Expanding your horizons by being able to understand a different language is really rewarding and you never know when it may come in handy.

3. Haute couture is the core of fashion. The history of haute couture is so rich, you can never learn enough. (Always be a student!) As the fashion cycle gets faster and faster, the appreciation for handcrafted garments made with such love and care is really something special and indeed a true art form.

A Tribe Called Turquoise.

May 22, 2015

TGIF!

Happy Friday people.

Fridays really get me excited, especially in the summertime. My job has summer hours which means we are able to get out of the office early. That is…if we are in a good place with our work of course! I really try to take advantage of this office perk to hang out with friends, run some errands, and enjoy the summer sun! Hopefully I’ll be able to hit a patio with friends a little early and I’m crossing my fingers for sunshine. We’ve had a thunderstorm everyday this week and this girl is ready for the sun. Memorial Day weekend could not come at a better time. Who doesn’t love an extra day off work?

Tribe Called Turquoise - summer dress

This dress is one I picked up at Forever 21 on a whim. It was way up high hanging on the wall but the colors really drew me in. While I wouldn’t say that I’m shy of prints, I’m not always naturally drawn to them as a first choice. The length also made me nervous…as I get farther and farther away from twenty-one these are things you gotta think about…(but let’s just let’s keep that age thing between us). I tried it on and actually liked it. The print + the color combination didn’t overwhelm me and the length turned out to be just right, which is an important ingredient for summer dresses!

I’m excited that summer is kicking off! All of a sudden summer trips, weddings, and events are here. My calendar is getting full…and that’s just the way I like it!

Haute Shopping. Nude Sandals.

May 20, 2015

As the summer months are upon us, I’ve been taking a look at my warm weather wardrobe to see what needs to be updated. During the summer, my weekend wear go-to outfit is a pair of shorts (usually these), a simple v-neck tee-shirt, and a pair of sandals or wedges with a fun necklace to complete the look. I’ve been buying up a lot of flat sandals lately but since I can’t really wear those to work,  I need another option that can transition between the week and the weekend. I think a nude high-heel sandal would work perfectly.

The nude sandal is such a versatile item in your closet. Color wise, it can go with almost any outfit – anything from all white or all black or as the balance to a colorful printed look. A nude sandal works with all silhouettes from casual shorts, professional skirts, to jeans and dresses for all occasions. I had a pair from a few years ago that I completely wore out but for some reason I haven’t made the investment for another pair. It’s probably because that pair was kind of perfect hybrid between a sandal and a pump and I haven’t come across a good replacement. My new strategy is to find a sandal for this season and a pump for the fall. (check back for a follow-up post!) I’ve seen so many cute spring outfits popping up and many people are sporting nude sandals. That inspired me to find some options for a new nude sandal to add to my shoe stash.

Necessary Neon Floral.

May 16, 2015

Yes! I’m so happy that it is finally the weekend. This week was a rough one. There were some good things mixed in with some not so good, but now that it’s Saturday, I can exhale and recharge. And although the weather doesn’t show it, I can feel that the summer season is right around the corner. Who has interesting plans for Memorial Day Weekend?!

cute floral skirt

When I shop, I buy pieces that mean something to me. Most every item in my closet tells a story. For instance, the pair of outlet store floral platform heels that I initially felt lukewarm about. I bought them on sale, only because they were on sale, and I get the most compliments whenever I wear them. Or the story of my H&M designer collaboration dresses that I just HAD to have – and have yet to wear…I mean you can’t really pass up Lanvin & Margiela right? (I promise they will get their shine soon!) One of my favorite stories is about a pair of patent yellow sandals I bought at a sample sale and a former boss of mine fell in love with them. She playfully joked more than once that I should give them to her since we wore the same size. I never knew how to respond…I mean when your boss wants your shoes, what do you even say to that?

And the list could go on. (A story about my $20 hot pink thrift store coat comes to mind.) For the most part, I try to shop with a purpose. When your clothes become more than apparel, more than something you just put on, you have gained memories that transcend the clothes. It’s about the stories and feelings that you can take with you for longer than you may have the actual garments.

neon floral 4.

This J.Crew floral skirt is no different from the clothing and accessories above. This is a story about patience. I think I stalked this skirt for at least 6 months. Okay, maybe it wasn’t 6…but it had to be at least 4. I think I saw it first in store and fell in love. While it was everything I could want in a skirt – scuba, floral, neon, and ruffle (in a good way) – paying over a hundred bucks for one item was not in my budget. Never one to miss a sale, I kept my eye on this skirt. Browsed J.Crew’s website on the regular to see if the skirt was within my price range. After a while, I gave up hope….but then I ran into a girl at work wearing a dress in the same material and print. She mentioned she got it on sale and I immediately got excited that the skirt would soon be within my grasp. It initially was only half off, but I held out and ended up purchasing the skirt for about a third of the original price. Waiting sometimes (most times) doesn’t work out, but this was meant to be. I ordered the skirt online, it fit perfectly and the rest is history.

Thinking about how long I waited for this skirt makes my heart smile every time I think about it. If you have any heart-warming clothes stories, please share. I’d love to know!

Style Me: Blue Bachelorette Bash

May 13, 2015

One of the things I love most in life is shopping. Of course, there are things that rank above it — like family, faith, & french fries to name a few — but there aren’t many. That being said, I promise I’m so much more than just a shopaholic! #scoutshonor

When you are good at something, it’s in your best interest to pursue your passion. This is my opportunity to do what I love. To take a spin on it, I’ve now started shopping for other people….I’m excited to start my adventure as a personal stylist!

I love that I can assist people with confidence through clothing. I’m taking my God-given gift of “putting things together” and working that into new silhouettes, color combinations, and fabrics to help people look at clothes and their closets differently. Sometimes, you just need someone be a guide for creative ways of remixing your closet classics.

All of that to say, I’m starting a new series on the blog called [Style Me] which will be the home for all styling questions/inquiries that I can help answer. Sometimes I even need help styling myself, so I’ll brainstorm ideas through this series. Follow along via Instagram and Twitter with the hashtag #StyleMe (and follow me @theblockishaute if you haven’t yet)!

For my first edition of [Style Me] I am pulling together ideas of what to wear to a bachelorette party. My sweet friend Ally (of @allyasl fame) is getting married in June and her bachelorette bash is coming up. We were asked to all wear blue for our big girls’ night out so I’ve been searching for months for ideas of what to wear. I’ve decided to put some of my top picks here so I can easily find them when I’m ready to purchase. I love getting dressed up but I can’t seem to decide on long vs. short, lace vs. form-fitting, or solid vs. print. Thanks to online shopping the options are endless!

Navy Lace || Floral Scuba || Strapless Bodycon
Ruffle Mini || Fitted Halter || Lace Maxi

I don’t think I can go wrong with any of these choices. Here’s to (finally) choosing a dress and having a great time celebrating our bride-to-be!

If you have questions on what to wear to an event or how to wear something, email me at theblockishaute@gmail.com and I may just feature your topic in the next [Style Me] post!

More info on my styling services coming soon!

Sunday Clutch. & Happy Mother’s Day!

May 10, 2015

sunday clutch 1.Man oh man, has it been a week. From birthday celebrations and cinco de mayo shenanigans, to learning pains in a new position at work and crazy thunderstorms, to ending with me getting sick as the cherry on top. So yes, I’m writing this post cuddled up on my couch catching up on Scandal while drinking copious amounts of orange juice as I try to feel better.

sunday clutch 4.

sunday clutch 2.

We are still getting a lot of rain here in Dallas but when the sun is out, its gorgeous. Lots of people were out and about enjoying the sunshine. This is one of my go-to warm weather outfit combinations. Colored shorts, interesting tank top, wedges, and a fun clutch.

This version includes the classic J. Crew chino shorts. I add a pair or two to my collection every spring/summer season. I love finding them on sale at the J. Crew Factory outlet locations as well (the website is having a crazy sale right now…go!). The colors offered and easy fit make these my summer favorites. My Vince tank is old but I still love to wear it. I layer a simple plain tank top underneath as a solid background. While it is a sweater, the open knit makes it not too hot to wear in the summer. My oversized neon clutch purse is a great pop-of-color accessory. It’s big and makes a statement. I love adding it to an outfit with a monochromatic feel or even with all black. Even if you are not a big fan of color, mixing it in with a bright accessory will help jazz up your look.

Met Gala 2015. China Through the Looking Glass

May 4, 2015

If you are into fashion, the Met Gala is THE event of the season. The one night of the year where celebrities from all arenas team up with the fashion industry’s best for a night of pure red carpet drama. There is couture abound as designers come up with avant-garde creations for this annual themed-event. It’s great to see who executes the theme well and scratch your head at those who miss the mark. This year’s theme is China: Through the Looking Glass – celebrating how the East meets West in the world of fashion.

Sarah Jessica Parker. Custom H&M + Philip Treacy.

Sarah Jessica Parker. Custom H&M + Philip Treacy.

Sarah Jessica Parker is the queen of the Met Gala. She always shows up giving 100% in the year’s theme. Whether you love or hate her looks, you cannot deny that she is the standard for executing the theme. The Philip Treacy headpiece is definitely a showstopper. I give her props for rocking it, when else would you be able to wear a work of art like that? (Side note: SJP always has the best date. Alexander McQueen, Andy Cohen…enough said.)

Allison Williams x Giambattista Valli

Allison Williams x Giambattista Valli

Do we know who Allison Williams’ red carpet stylist is? Major props are due for having this ‘Girls’ star in stunning looks every time she steps out. This Haute Couture Giambattista Valli gown is a dream.

Met Gala 2015. Janelle Monae. H&M.

Janelle Monae. Custon H&M.

H&M collaborated with another star for tonight’s event. The result is a perfectly on trend and on theme fit that stays true to Janelle Monae’s brand as well. A crop top and a cape?! Yes. Plus an updo with a dramatic braid? Yes and yes.

Anne Hathaway. Ralph Lauren.

Anne Hathaway. Ralph Lauren.

Anne Hathaway knows how to turn heads on the red carpet. You never quite know the direction she’s going to go but I like this choice tonight. The Ralph Lauren liquid gold column dress with a hood is a bold, yet beautiful choice.

Met Gala 2015. Joan Smalls. Roberto Cavalli.

Joan Smalls. Roberto Cavalli.

Joan Smalls is my model muse. She’s wearing purple like no one has ever worn purple (except her…here). This Roberto Cavalli gown is everything and then some. The lace detail perfectly contrasts to the tough belt and the black choker is the best accessory. Joan represents Estee Lauder well tonight as one of the faces of the iconic beauty brand.

Bee Shaffer. Alexander McQueen

Bee Shaffer. Alexander McQueen

As Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour’s daughter, I would imagine that Bee Shaffer has connections to the most beautiful gowns in the world. I really love her choice tonight.  I am partial to anything involving cherry blossoms as they bring back fond memories of my early years spent living in Japan. This gorgeous Alexander McQueen dress with a cherry blossom motif is perfect for the evening’s festivities.

Tell me who were some of your favorite Met Gala looks!

Buy me a Birkin.

May 1, 2015

No, I’m not asking you to actually buy me a Hermes Birkin handbag. It’s just a part of the cute saying on my tank top. (You can if you want to though, I won’t stop you!)

“Roses are red, violets are blue. Buy me a Birkin, and I will love you.”

Cute right? A girl can only dream.

Buy Me Birkin 6

I bought this lovely muscle tank from The Elizabeth Chronicles in the middle of December or January and I’ve been itching to wear it out. The fabric is soft and easy breezy, perfect for a warm afternoon. My coral tank underneath adds the necessary pop of color.

Guess who’s excited about the sunshine? This girl. There’s something about the beautiful bright rays that gets me in a good mood. I’m happy that it’s finally May, hopefully the weekly torrential rainstorms will take a break. Texas has been nice in keeping the rainy weather to the week days as the last couple of weekends have been sunny and not too hot.

This is the first time I’ve worn shorts out this year so you know I had to get my legs ready! Us girls tend to neglect our legs during the winter. But let me tell you, as soon as the weather is right, I break out my cut off shorts. I wish I could live in them! My mom hates them on me but I could probably wear them everyday. Not sure why I get so excited about cut offs. Maybe it’s because it’s an easy way to dress in the bohemian spirit which is such a big trend this season. I can’t really dress boho chic at my corporate job, but the weekend is my time to let out the inner bohemian girl in me. I love to mix and match styles, taking inspiration from different genres to create a style that is uniquely me.

Spring Pink.

April 27, 2015

When the sun comes out in Dallas, it’s basically a requirement to get outside to feel the sunshine. Friday night a huge storm came through so I was glad to see bright, sunny skies the next morning. After running some Saturday errands, I met up with some of my girlfriends for a sushi date. Not much better than sushi and quality time with friends. Patio time is my favorite time!

Spring Style. Pink.1

Spring style is nice because you can still layer but with lighter pieces. This season is time for fun colors. One of the best ways to experiment with color is with scarves and other accessories. Scarves are my go-to accessory, I could wear one everyday [but I won’t!]. I just love this pink and white scarf my brother gave me. It’s so big, yet lightweight, making it really versatile. It’s by a brand called Raj carried at Last Call by Neiman Marcus. I threw on the scarf over an easy Vince oversized tee paired with skinny jeans from one of my favorite denim brands, Mother. The fit of their jeans are spot on. This skinny style is their classic fit, called The Looker. I chose a silver cuff and ring to go with the shades of red/pink. My burgundy suede lace-up heels are one of my go-to pairs of shoes right now. They add so much to a simple outfit and really make it pop. The lace-up shoe trend is everywhere right now and I can’t get enough! Might have to add a flat pair of sandals like these to my collection soon!

MunaLuchi Bridal Tour Stop – Dallas.

April 21, 2015

The Dough Bar cookies

Last week, I got the privilege of working with Ebony Peoples Events and Design on a fabulous event for MunaLuchi Bride magazine. If you haven’t heard of MunaLuchi, it’s a bridal magazine that caters to brides “who crave culture and style”. They are touring various cities hosting fun-filled events with inspiring decor, special access to Coterie members (planners, photographers, etc. endorsed by MunaLuchi), cocktails, hors d’ oeuvres, and live entertainment. Guests received a swag bag with goodies from Tata Harper, cookies from The Dough Bar, and the spring/summer MunaLuchi magazine featuring blogger and ‘Blood, Sweat, & Heels’ star Demetria Lucas D’Oyley who tied the knot in October 2014.

MunaLuchi SpringSummer 2015

It was really a special treat that the Editor-in-Chief of MunaLuchi, Jacqueline Nwobu came to the event. She was a woman-in-demand as everyone wanted to get a moment with her. The whole night she was warm and open to each and every person.

Prepping for the event of course took weeks of coordination and planning with Ebony and all the vendors who so graciously donated their services. We started set-up for the day around 9am. Our 10am Starbucks run was much-needed. The venue was Sixty Five Hundred and our theme was Kate Spade inspired decor in black, white, and pink. We had four different styled table settings courtesy of Prashe, lounge furniture from DFW Lounge Rentals, and a greenery wall with vintage frames, a la Kim Kardashian’s floral wall from her wedding, that everyone loved!

Garden wall check in

In addition to decor, we had various vendors supporting the event. Some of my favorites were:
Wine Sponsor: Socologie Wine | Bridal Gowns: White Gown Showroom | Catering: Low Country Quisine | Photo Booth Fun: A&K Photo Booth

We rounded out the night with entertainment from an amazing Dallas band called Authentic Soundz and our go-to DJ – DJ Gumbo.

Prashe Styled Tables

My photos are just iPhone snaps but the official photographer for the night was Izehi – her work is so good! We had such a good time putting on and hosting the event! So many people showed up and had a great time.

Looking forward to hosting more #MunaTour events!
